Consumer Awareness: Home Safety Protection

April 24, 2024

Consumer awareness is about empowering the consumer to make informed decisions regarding products and services in the marketplace. This includes understanding features, important product information, your rights, and how to make a complaint if you are unhappy with a product or service. It also involves being aware of potential safety hazards.

Why consumer awareness is important:

  • Increased Confidence: Knowledge empowers you to navigate the marketplace with confidence, knowing you’re making informed decisions.
  • Protection from Unethical Practices: Knowing your rights helps avoid scams, misleading advertising, and unfair contract terms.
  • Promotes a Fair Market: Consumer awareness fosters a marketplace where businesses are held accountable for fair practices and quality products.
  • Safety: Consumer awareness campaigns often target important safety issues to protect consumers from harm.

Many resources from the Federal government are available to help you become a more informed consumer about home renovation and paint safety. The following are two best-selling publications from the Government Publishing Office Bookstore that offer consumers valuable home safety protection information.

Lead-Safe Certified Guide to Renovate Right. This booklet provides basic facts about lead and your family’s health and how to choose a contractor if you are a property owner. It includes information on preparing for the renovation or repair job and what to look for during and after the job.

Protect Your Family from Lead in Your Home describes the hazards of lead-based paint in homes built before 1978, shows how lead gets into the body, the health effects of lead paint, what you can do to protect your family, and where to go for information. It lists State health and environmental agencies, EPA regional offices, and Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) regional offices. Spanish version available here.

By becoming a more aware consumer, you can protect yourself and your family and make informed choices.

Publications for Safe Waterway Navigation

April 17, 2024

The importance of rules and regulations relative to the navigation of all shapes and sizes of ships, from fishing boat pleasure dinghies to elegant yachts to large container ships, is critical to the safe operation of military, commercial, and personal vessels.

Two essential resources available from the U.S. Government Bookstore that all waterway users need to keep on board their vessels for safe navigation are the Navigation Rules and Regulations Handbook and the U.S. Coast Guard Incident Management Handbook.

The Navigation Rules and Regulations Handbook is a crucial reference for anyone operating a vessel on navigable waterways. It outlines the international and inland regulations that govern safe navigation and prevent collisions at sea.

Here’s a breakdown of some key points about the Handbook:

  • Content: It contains the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972 (commonly called the 72 COLREGS) and the Inland Navigation Rules.
  • Purpose: Promotes safety on the water by providing mariners with a clear understanding of the rules they must follow.
  • Authority: The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) publishes the official version, and it meets their carriage requirements for certain sized vessels.

The U.S. Coast Guard Incident Management Handbook (IMH) is designed to assist Coast Guard personnel in using the Incident Command System (ICS) during response operations. The IMH is intended to be an easy reference job aid for responders. It is not a policy document but rather guidance for response personnel. The handbook is laid out so that the generic information applicable to all responses is presented up-front.

Remember, staying updated on navigation rules is essential for safe boating.

The Harmonized Tariff Schedule: An essential resource for exporters

April 12, 2024

The Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) is a key resource for understanding international trade, particularly for imports into the United States. As the United States International Trade Commission (USITC) website describes, the “Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States sets out the tariff rates and statistical categories for all merchandise imported into the U.S. The HTS is based on the international Harmonized System, which is the global system of nomenclature applied to most world trade in goods.”

The NEW Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the U.S. 36th Edition 2024 is currently available from the U.S. Government Bookstore and is the primary source for exporters.

Key Functions of the HTS:

  • Classification:
    • The HTS assigns a unique 10-digit code to each product based on its characteristics.
    • This code determines the applicable duty rate and any special requirements for the import process.
  • Duty Rates:
    • The HTS specifies the tariff rate (tax) that must be paid on imported goods.
    • These rates vary depending on the product category, country of origin, and applicable trade agreements.
  • Statistics:
    • The HTS helps track import data by classifying goods into specific categories.
    • This information is crucial for analyzing trade patterns and economic trends.

Understanding the HTS is essential for businesses involved in importing goods into the U.S. It helps them determine the classification of their products, calculate potential import duties, and ensure smooth passage through customs.

National Credit Union Administration Resources

March 20, 2024

The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) is an independent U.S. government agency that regulates and insures credit unions. They grant federal charters to credit unions and oversee their operations to ensure they comply with regulations. The NCUA also manages the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF), which insures deposits in most federal and state-chartered credit unions, similar to how FDIC insures deposits in banks.

The Government Publishing Office Bookstore offers helpful resources from the NCUA, including advice on protecting account holders and detailed insurance information about their accounts.

How Your Accounts Are Federally Insured for NCUA federally insured credit union members explains the detailed insurance coverage of individual credit union accounts and where to find more resources on financial literacy. Also available in Spanish here.

Your Insured Funds Booklet. Financial literature specifically for credit union members contains in-depth coverage of how the NCUA federally insures credit union accounts, what accounts are securable, and where to find more information on the NCUA and other financial literacy services. Also available in Spanish here.

The NCUA allows various accounts to be opened so members can enjoy the security of a federally guaranteed credit union account. They include:

  • Single accounts
  • Joint accounts
  • Trust accounts
  • Retirement accounts
  • Revocable trust accounts

By insuring deposits, the NCUA provides a safety net for credit union members, giving them peace of mind that their money is protected in case of a credit union failure.

Best Selling Federal Books

March 7, 2024

It’s a new year, and now is a great time to reflect on the accomplishments made during the previous year. For the U.S. Government Bookstore, this means highlighting our best-selling Federal publications chosen by our customers over the past year. We will highlight some of our customers’ favorite government publications in this blog for the next several months.

March’s best-seller feature keeps in the Civics and Citizenship topic. To become a naturalized U.S. citizen, you must pass the naturalization test. Preparing For The Naturalization Test: A Pocket Study Guide from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) provides the civics test questions, answers, and reading and writing vocabulary to help you study.

The definition of “best-selling” can vary but generally refers to publications with exceptionally high sales figures. Here are a few notable topics that cover some of our most popular publications that deeply resonate with readers, securing their place as best-sellers.

  • Civics and Citizenship: Preparing to become a United States citizen and learning about the American system of government is extremely popular with our customers each year.
  • NASA Publications: From stunning space exploration imagery to scientific reports and educational materials, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) publications capture the public’s imagination and inform them about the universe and our place in it.
  • Tax Guides: The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) publishes annual tax guides covering individual and business income taxes. While primarily instructional, these guides are in high demand during tax season, making them consistent best-sellers.

January and February’s best-seller features, Learn About the United States: Quick Civics Lessons, helps immigrants study for the civics and English portions of the naturalization test. There are 100 civics history and government questions on the test. For example, “What is the supreme law of the land in America?” This question and others are part of the updated civics flash cards for the U.S. Naturalization test. It can also be used in a classroom setting or as a fun family game civics refresher to check how much you know about the nation in which you live, the freedoms you enjoy, and the responsibilities that come from citizenship.

Civics Flash Cards for the Naturalization Test asks important questions about U.S. history, such as the supreme law of the land in America. This question and others are part of the updated civics flash cards to help individuals study for the U.S. Naturalization test. There’s no better way to learn about the basics of preparing for the U.S. Naturalization test than the 100 questions and answers deck of flash cards produced by the U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services. Whether you are an immigrant reviewing facts for the naturalization test or any American citizen who may want a refresher about the American government and history, this flashcard set is one of the easiest educational tools for you to use.

It’s important to note that the specific best-selling federal publications can vary depending on the year and other factors. However, these examples highlight the diverse range of topics and audiences federal publications cater to and their important role in informing and engaging the public.

February 21, 2024

Rho Ophiuchi

The National Aeronautics Space Administration’s (NASA) much anticipated 2024 NASA Science Calendar is now available from the U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO) Online Bookstore. The NASA Science Calendar is a yearly publication that features stunning imagery of the cosmos, informative articles about NASA’s missions, and important dates to remember. Sun Emits X1.2 Flare

February: Sun Emits X1.2 Flare. An X1.2-class solar flare flashes on the left edge of this image of the Sun, captured by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory on January 5, 2023. The image shows a blend of light from the 171- and 131-angstrom wavelengths, which highlight the Sun’s corona and flaring regions. Solar flares are powerful bursts of energy.

Bloomin’ Atlantic

March: Bloomin’ Atlantic. Vibrant swirls of green and turquoise appeared in the North Atlantic for several weeks in April 2023. Some of the color is due to an abundance of phytoplankton, floating plant-like organisms. Although they are microscopic, large groups of phytoplankton are visible from space, as revealed in this image captured by the NASA  –U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Landsat 9 Operational Land Imager-2 (OLI-2) instrument.

There is more amazing imagery, “From fire to water to ice and beyond, NASA Science is exploring the universe,” in the new 2024 NASA Science Calendar.

The NASA Science Calendar remains one of our best sellers. Grab your copy while supplies last!

Black History Month

February 15, 2024

Celebrated in February, Black History Month, also known as African American History Month, is an annual celebration of the achievements of Black Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history.

The month originated in 1926 as “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Woodson, the son of former slaves, believed that Black history was largely ignored in mainstream education and that celebrating the contributions of Black Americans would help to combat racism and prejudice.

The history of the achievements of Black Americans is vast and diverse, and the U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO) has printed several publications highlighting those triumphs, such as their role in Congress.

Black Americans in Congress, 1870-2022, features the important history-making members elected to Federal office since 1870. This resource provides the most comprehensive history available on the 175 Black lawmakers who’ve served on Capitol Hill—from Senator Hiram R. Revels of Mississippi and Representative Joseph H. Rainey of South Carolina in 1870 to the first-term Members of the 117th Congress (2021–2023).

Here are some ways to celebrate Black History Month:

  • Learn about the history of Black Americans. There are many resources are available online and in libraries, including books, articles, documentaries, and museum exhibits.
  • Support Black businesses and organizations.
  • Attend a Black history event or celebration.
  • Read books and watch movies about Black history and culture.
  • Donate to organizations that support Black communities.
  • Talk to your friends and family about the importance of Black history.

By learning about and celebrating Black history, we can all help to create a more just and equitable society.
